The table compares the number of male and female school-leavers entering university over a forty-year period. The percentage of Japenese students attending university rose steadily from 1960. At that time, a very small percentae of women went on to university and only 15 per cent of men received a university education, whereas nowadays, these figures are significantly higher.

Between 1960 and 2000, the increase in the percentage of women going to university in Japan was fairly steady, although from 1990 to 2000 figures rose more sharply. By 2000, it was estimated that 25 per cent of Japenese girls leaving school were entering university education, but this was still a smaller percentae than the figure for boys.

Generally, the men pattern showed more variation. Figures rose to a high of 40 per cent between 1960 and 1980, which represented the longest period of increase. It was followed, however, by a slight fall in numbers between 1980 and 1990, but then in 2000 the figures retured to just above the 1980 level.

Overall, the table shows an increase in the percentage of students of both sexes going to university. However, the rate of increase for girls is far greater than for boys, with over eight times the percentage of girls going to university in 2000 than in 1960.
